Socks and Cuteness

Finn can now grab his own toes. This is first of all very cute, but it also enables us to play a game I like to call "put-socks-on-take-socks-off-put-socks-on-take-socks-off-put-socks-on-take-socks-off-fine-just-have-cold-feet-then".
He really is pretty cute when he does it though.

Other people have been saying things like"he is so cute!" and my first instinct is to think that they are not telling the truth. Why? Because I have been guilty of saying that about babies I knew were not cute. What else are you supposed to say? And if you are reading this, let me assure you that of course YOUR babies are all cute. I was talking about someone else's babies.

And then I wonder, when people say that Finn is cute, are they just saying that because they are my family/friend/salesperson/coworker/vendor rep?

So here I am, not really trusting anyone's assessment of the cuteness of my baby, and realizing that my own judgment is entirely biased, and wondering, how does anyone ever really know if their baby is actually cute or if people are just being polite? But I think I've found an unbiased opinion.

I was leaving work late the other night and the cleaning people had arrived. One of the cleaning ladies stopped me as I was leaving and said "Are you Sara?" (she isn't psychic; there are family pictures in my office, but when the cleaning person stops you it usually means they are going to ask you to please empty out your starbucks cup before putting it in your wastebasket, or something like that) So I said "yes," waiting for her to tell me to make sure all the pistachio shells get into the trash can or something, and she said, "your baby is so cute! I just wanted to let you know."

That's the most unbiased opinion I've come across so far. So, the rest of you can now express your opinion in confidence that it has been verified by an impartial third party.

Family Portraits

Here are our new family pictures, taken by the amazing and talented photographer Art Russell.

Adventures in Baby Food

I make Finn's baby food myself. This makes me feel like a good mom. It's really cheap and really easy. It also, quite frankly, makes me feel a little smug, and I'm ok with that.
Tonight Finn had avocados, which he is sometimes ok with, but are not yet one of his faves. He didn't really want them tonight, so I mixed in some banana. He was really digging it, so I thought I'd give it a try. You know, it really wasn't bad. The banana and avocado both have a sort of earthy rich flavor that works pretty well together. I think banana-avocado ice cream would be pretty tasty. Maybe with cashews.

Before you whip out the ice cream maker, I should let you know that I will eat pretty much anything. This served me well when we lived overseas. Thursday night was seafood buffet night in the hotel where we lived, and although that sounds good, it usually meant that we would be served several unidentifiable forms of strange sea creatures. There was usually a big bowl of large octopus tentacles boiled in their own ink, which I thought was pretty tasty, but Jonathan soon decided that Thursday night was Burger King night. All that to say, I hope Finn is not a picky eater. I think it is half from genetics, and half from my mom forcing us to eat squash and zucchini and salmon cakes.
I have to be honest, though... I still don't like salmon cakes.

Kisses

Last night Finnegan started giving kisses! It was so sweet. He did it when we were putting him to bed; we both give him kisses before we lay him down, and last night he kissed me back! And not the weird suckerface thing little babies do, but the cute open mouth kissy thing that bigger babies do. He did it again this morning. Sooo sweet.

I should probably tell you that getting kisses from other people's babies kind of freaks me out (all the slobber!). And if Finn tries to kiss me while he has a mouthful of sweet potatoes, I will probably deflect. But when he is freshly washed, in his pjs and he reaches out those chubby little arms... oh, man. I'm a sucker.

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. Can you tell I've started back to school? Not much time for messing about on the internet. As Oscar Wilde says, "I have distressingly little time for sloth or idleness."

PS - We took family pictures on Sunday, so as soon as I get them we'll post them for you to see!!
