Did you know COPS is one of TV's longest running shows?
So last Saturday night at 10:15pm, I was sitting in the dining room, working on the computer (and by 'working' I mean 'taking a book quiz at goodreads.com') and Jonathan had just gone to bed. Suddenly I heard a massive CRASH-BANG sound from right outside the window where I was sitting. It sounded so close that my lizard brain forced me to throw myself from the chair into the floor, because it sounded like something was coming through the window at any moment. I then grabbed the phone and started dialing 911, because it was the kind of noise where you think you had better do that. I heard someone outside yelling "are you ok?" and I opened the front door, only to see 2 squad cars parked in front of my house with red and blue lights flashing.
I realized instantly that whatever had made the noise had either been caused by the police or witnessed closely by them, and I thought I'd better SHUT THE DANG DOOR. I told the 911 operator that the police were already here, thank you. I then ran to Finn's room, which is on the front of the house, and grabbed him up out of bed and ran into our bedroom, where Jonathan was sleeping. I made him get up and go look out the blinds to see what the heck was going on.
You can relax now; it wasn't nearly as big a deal as I thought. The police were apparently chasing someone down our street (which has a 25mph speed limit, is in a school zone, and has speed bumps and a stop sign) and the pursued vehicle lost control and hit our neighbor's truck, which was parked on the street. I had some small satisfaction in this, because they are always parking behind our driveway and now maybe they will stop parking in the street.
So the two women (not ladies, but women) from the car were sitting on the curb, cuffed, and a total of SEVEN squad cars, a fire truck, and an ambulance pulled up in front of our house. I guess it was a slow night, because all the cops just stood around talking and smoking and occasionally shining flashlights at the cars. I began to be concerned that the rest of the city was going unprotected, but my street was REALLY safe, since there were so many cops hanging out. By 11pm the tow truck came and everyone was gone. but it was really exciting while it lasted, and we don't get a lot of excitement so I thought I'd share it with you. Hope you enjoyed COPS, the home edition.
